Your dog should be routinely examined for ticks after every walk. Ticks can be removed at home if you feel comfortable doing so. Grab the tick with a small pair of tweezers or a specialized tick remover that is available from you vet. It is important to apply the instrument as close to the skin as possible in order not to tear off the tick’s head and leave it inside the skin. When you have a good hold on the tick, twist it counter-clockwise from the skin, while pulling back gently. If the tick’s head is left inside the skin it will have to be removed surgically.
