Examining your dog’s conjunctivas requires caution and care. A dog’s eye is equal to that of a human, and is very, very sensitive. Using your thumb, gently pull the lower lid approximately 1 inch/2.5 cm downward. Continue to pull downward until the conjunctiva is exposed. The normal appearance should be pink and moist. Dryness, reddening, yellow discoloration, or the appearance of a red lump around the third eyelid (in the corner of the eye adjacent to the nose) are symptoms of a pathological condition. If your dog’s conjunctiva appears to be irritated or has an awkward appearance, please consult your veterinarian.
